Dear Mr. Sieber:

SUBJECT: NRC Combined Inspection Nos. 50-334/93-15; 50-412/93-16

l

l

An announced safety inspection of the radioactive waste management and transponation

activities at your facility was conducted by Mr. J. Nick on July 26-30,1993. The results of

this inspection were discussed with you and your staff on July 30,1993.

Areas reviewed during this inspection were imponant to health and safety and am discussed

in the enclosed inspection mpod. Tid findings are based upon inspector observation,

interviews of personnel, and review of records. Areas reviewed included storage of

f

radioactive waste, mdioactive waste processing, transponation of radioactive materials,

staffing levels, staff qualifications, training, quality assurance, and relevant procedures.

Your radioactive waste management and transponation program was generally effective in

,

safely disposing of radioactive materials. Areas toured in your facility were well maintained

t

and exhibited good housekeeping. The radioactive waste processing was performed by

,

qualified individuals with documented training and qualifications. The assurance of quality,

including audits and surveillances, was comprehensive and detailed. Improvements were

!

noted in the training for radiological controls technicians preparing and documenting

radioactive waste shipments. Minor weakness was noted in the calculation for curie content

of waste containers based upon dose rate measurements and isotopic content.

Within the scope of this inspection, one non-cited violation was identified regarding the

!

improper completion of shipping papers and is described in the attached inspection repon.

This violation was not cited due to its minor safety significance and because of your staff's

thorough efforts in instituting cormctive actions.
