July 19, 1993 The Honorable Tillie K. Fowler Member, United States House of Representatives 533 N. Nova Road Ormond Beach, Florida 32174

Dear Congresswoman Fowler:

I am responding to the April 30, 1993, letter from your constituent, Mr. Richard M. Grunwald (ref.: 93-00343-08).

Mr. Grunwald is seeking an evaluation, from a radiation safety standpoint, of men's underwear that contains a design and lettering in a light greenish color and glows in the dark after exposure to electric light.

Mr. Grunwald also asks if it is safe to wear this imported underwear.

Based on Mr. Grunwald's description of the design and lettering in a light greenish color and the " glow-in-the-dark" characteristic after exposure to light, we believe that a fluorescent paint or similar material, not radioactive material, is used to create the design and lettering.

Fluorescent materials are found in numerous types of clothing, toys, and other items available in department stores and catalogues.

Typically, fluorescent paint or similar materials " glow" after exposure to light, but the " glow" fades after the light source is removed.

Fluorescent paint or materials are'not radioactive and there are no radiation safety concerns associated with their use.

I trust that this reply responds to Mr. Grunwald's concerns.

Sincerely,

/
