Mr. C. K. McCoy Vice President Vogtle Electric Generating Plant P. O. Box 1295 Birmingham, AL 35201 Gentlemen:

SUBJECT:

NRC CONFIRMATORY MEASUREMENTS PROGRAM As part of the NRC Confirmatory Measurements Program, liquid samples spiked with beta emitting radionuclides were recently sent to the Vogtle facility for radiochemical analyses.

The spiked samples, with instructions, were sent under separate cover from the Department of Energy's Radiological and Environmental Sciences Laboratory on July 8,1993.

These samples are to be analyzed for tritium, iron-55, strontium-89, and strontium-90 concentrations in accordance with your approved procedures for analysis of liquid waste samples.

If routine analyses of this type are normally performed by a vendor, your vendor should be used to analyze the spike samples.

We request that the analyses be completed as soon as practicable, but no later than 60 days from receipt of this letter.

Results should be sent to V. S.

Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Region II, ATTN: Mr. T. R. Decker, 101 Marietta Street, Suite 2900, Atlanta, GA 30323. Our evaluation of your results will be discussed with your staff and transmitted by letter.

Spiked samples will be sent to you on an annual basis as part of our routine inspection program.

If you have any questions regarding this program, please contact Mr. Norman McNeill at 404-331-5094 or Mr. Thomas R. Decker at 404-331-2559.

Sincerely,

.a ulF:L William E. Cline, Chief Radiological Protection and Emergency Preparedness Branch Division of Radiation Safety and Safeguards cc:
