\\*****p May 3,1993 Project No. 680 ORGANIZATION: ASEA BROWN BOVERI-COMBUSTION ENGINEERING (ABB-CE)
SUBJECT:
SUMMARY
OF MEETING HELD WITH ABB AND ABB-CE TO DISCUSS TOPICS RELATED TO THE THERMAL HYDRAULIC MODELING 0F THE PIUS DESIGN USING RIGEL AND TRAC CODES On November 3 through 11, 1992, Brent Boyack, Los Alamos National Laboratory; David Ebert, Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research (RES); and Dino Scaletti, visited ASEA Brown Boveri Offices in Vasteras, Sweden, to discuss issues related to thermal hydraulic modeling of the PIUS design. The intent of this meeting was to help the staff gain insights relative to its attempts to accurately reflect the PIUS design in its TRAC model. ABB Atom presented their RIGEL model and the staff presented their work on the TRAC simulation of PIUS. Also discussed were severe accident questions that had been developed by ORNL under contract to RES.
Enclosures 1 and 2 are meeting summaries provided by David Ebert and Brent Boyack, respectively. contains the non-proprietary presentation material used during the meetings by ABB; the information considered proprietary by ABB is provided under separate cover and is identified as.
The ABB presentation materials were transmitted by letter from C.B. Brinkman to Dino Scaletti dated January 25, 1993.
As part of these meetings the staff was able to observe the MAGNE loop in operation. HAGNE is only intended as a proof of principle facility.
It operates at atmospheric pressure, reduced temperatures, and is not built to scale. The staff was also able to observe the ATLE test facility; the facility that was used to bench mark the RIGEL code used by ABB Atom to analyze the PIUS design. ATLE is presently being modified to run further tests of the PIUS design.
Further tests will include design responses to LOCAs and step changes in reactor coolant flow.
On November 11, 1992, D. Scaletti visited Forsmark 3 Nuclear Power Plant and the Swedish Final Repository for Radioactive Waste (SFR) located at the Forsmark site.
Forsmark 3 is one of only four Swedish boiling-water reactor plants not to be impacted by the sump debris problem that occurred at Barseback. The other 3 are Forsmark I and 2 and Oskarshamn 3; all internal pump plants.
Forsmark 3 and Oskarshamn 3 are the two newest designs to be constructed in Sweden. SFR is a final repository for low-and medium-level radioactive waste from Swedish industry. The repository is located about I km offshore, 50 meters below the Baltic Seabed in excavated rock.
