SUBJECT:

TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE REQUEST: RE AMERICAN i

BROAD OF RADIOLOGY " CERTIFICATIONS" q

This is in response to a verbal technical assistance request (TAR)L from-Region IV concerning the nomenclature of various. certification of the American Board of Radiology (ABR).

The ABR " certifications" recognized by NRC for authorized user status forL physicians using materials' authorized in 35.-300, 35.400, 35.500,.and 35.600' are described in 10 CFR 35.930(a)(2), 35.940(a)(1),'35.950(a)(1), and 35.960(a)(1).

Prior to 1979 the ABR issued a' certification in " radiology"

'i which covered both diagnostic and therapeutic _ radiology.

Since the ABR certification in " radiology" includes both diagnostic and therapeutic radiology, it. is acceptable-for certification for authorized user' status under Parts 35.910,'35.920, 35.930, 35.940, 35.950,-and 35.960. -However, as.is the case with any review of. training and experience, the recentness of training 1

and/or certification must.be considered.-~ -After 1979, the' ABR replaced the

" radiology" certification with two certifications, " diagnostic radiology" (with an additional designation in." nuclear radiology"), and'" therapeutic

+

radiology".

7 Certification by the ABR in diagnostic radiology is recognized as meeting:the

_ training requirements for authorized users ~ using 35.100, 35.200, and 35.500 material,;and certification by the ABR in therapeutic radiology;is recognized:

-for authorized users using 35.300, 35.400, 35.500,.and 35.600 materials.- In 1987, the American Board of-Radiology _(ABR) renamed " therapeutic radiology" t

" radiation oncology". The criteria for certification in radiation _ oncology are the same as those previously required for therapeutic radiology. The name.

was changed to more adequately describe the practice; Since certification in " therapeutic radiology"~ and " radiation oncology"; are synonymous, both may be accepted to determine authorized user status =for physicians using;'35.300, 35.400, 35.500, and 35.600 materials on a case by case basis until_ NRC adds the radiation oncology certification ~ to the' regulations.
