Mr. Harold L.fPrice i'

Director of Regulation U. S. Atomic Energy Commission h

Washington, D.C. 20545

Dear Mr. Price:

j' We are now in the process of making plans for the addition of a generating unit of about 500 IG to_ our system for service May 1,1970.

Our preliminary findings indicate that a nuclear unit is a definite i

possibility.

We understand your office has an arrangement whereby you can i

undertake a preliminary informal review of proposed nuclear plant sites anc furnish advise on site acceptability.

The following sites cre being given consideration.

l (1) Monticello, Minnesota - On the Mississippi River about 35 i

miles upstream from Minneapolis (2) Prairie Island - On the Mississippi River about five miles upstream from Red Wing, Minnesota (3) Oak Park Heights - On the St. Croix River adjacent to Bayport, Minnesota. A 550 MW fossil fueled plant is under construction on the site for service in 1968.

We have considerable data on the various sites, especially No. 3 4

and we vould be pleased to fbrnish whatever vc have that you might need for your preliminary review prior to meeting with us.

If possible, ve would flil$e th ' mees with your people as soon as I

practical and to have your comments on our three sites by January 15 We appreciate that this is'an1 unreasonably short period of time for a site review but we must make n' decision on plant type and location by l

February 1st. We understand this# preliminary investigation vill be con-sidered completely informal and no publicity or public record action will result.
