DearDirector:
The University of Utah Nuclear Engineering Laboratory hereby submits the following items concerning decommissioning of the two research nuclear reactors, the AGN 201 (License # R 25, Docket 50 72) and the TRIGA Mk I (License # R 126, Docket 50-407), in accordance with 10CFR50.33 and 50.75 and the NRC Rule entitled General Requirements for Decommissioning Nuclear Facilities" (53FR24018,06/27/88).
- 1. AGN 201, R 25
- a. The decommissioning costs of the AGN 201 are estimated to be $ 35,000. This cost i
includes only decontamination and removal of the AGN tank, removal and shipment of all fuel plates and control rods. nis actual cost reflects principally labor and material charges for completing the stated activities. Other costs will be deferred to the TRIGA License, R 126.
- b. The University of Utah is a public Institution of Higher Education of the State of Utah provided for under 10CFR50.75(e)(2)(iv). The funds necessary for the decommissioning of the AGN 201 have been allocated and decommissioning is in progress.
- c. The AGN 201 shall be decommissioned before significant changes in the decommissioning cost can occur. Therefore, a review of the decommissioning cost on a periodic basis shall not be necessary.
- 2. TRIGA Mk I, R 126
- a. The decommissioning costs of the TRIGA Mk I are estimated to be $ 350,000. This cost includes decontamination and removal of the TRIGA tank as well as re shipment of all fuel elements and activated structures. The facility shall be returned to unrestricted use. This cost is based on the costs encountered at the Michigan State University for the decommissioning of their TRIGA Mk I.
- b. The University of Utah is a public Institution of Higher Education of the State of Utah provided for under 10CFR50.75(e)(2)(iv). The actual funds necessary for the decommissioning of the TRIGA Mk I will be requested at the time when a decision to decommission is made,
