NRC ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION INITIATIVES 1

Your July 16, 1990 memorandum provides a number of useful suggestions regarding

{

conservation efforts at the NRC.

Edward L. Halman of the Office of Adminis-tration has been working for several months to develop viable, cost-effective means of expanding our conservation efforts.

The staff is developing a conservation plan that will seek to expand our re-cycling program when cost-effective to include additional types of paper, aluminum cans, bottles and newspapers.

This is part of our ongoing conser-vation efforts.

l On October 26, 1990 the Office of Administration will be pre m tad with the Federal Energy Efficiency Award by the Departmeni, vi Energy.

This award will recognize our efforts in implementing an energy conservation program that re-suited in a 12 percent reduction in energy consumption at the OWFN Building.

We have also taken the following conservation actions during the past several months.

Directed our supplier of bottled water at the 0WFN Building to supply c

biodegradable paper cups instead of plastic cups.

Began printing the Commission weekly meeting schedule, retirement notices,

)

Employee Recreation Association flyers, the EDO Information Report, the Library Media Monitor and similar work on white paper.

As a result, we j

estimate a savings of,$17,000 during FY90 in colored paper costs.

l l

Requested the OWFN facility management contractor to use non-aerosol i

I cleaning and maintenance products.

Non-aerosal products are now being used extensively at OWFN.

Ordered signs for our photocopy machines encouraging staff to use the two-sided feature to reduce paper consumption.

e Have informed the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) of NRC's desire Further, the NRC to print all of its NUREG reports on recycled paper.

has requested GPO approval to print "This Report Was Printed Using Re-cycled Paper" at the bottom of the last text page of NRC publications, as appropriate.

Requested the Joint Committee on Printing /GPO approv in NRC offices.

A check of restroom paper products at the OWFN and Phillips buildings indicated that they contain recovered materials.

In future janitorial service contracts we will require the use of recycled paper products.

NRC's printing plant and copy centers print on both sides of the paper unlessA the requester justifies one side use.

printing subcontractors are printed on both sides of the paper.

We have met with the cafeteria contractor to see if biodegradable materials We are also exploring styrofoam and plastic can be used for food service.
