METEOROLOGICAL MONITORING INSTRUMENTATION SPECIAL REPORT TECIINICAL SPECIFICATION 333.4.s i
ilACKGROUND On the morning of July 13, 1990, it was determined that the Meteorological Information Data Acquisition System (MIDAS), which provides meteorological information to the control room, was out of senice. An attempt that afternoon to restore the system to operable status proved unsuccessful. Since the system was scheduled to be replaced starting the following week. no further attempt was made to repair the existing system.
i Replacement of the old MIDAS computer system began on July 17,1990 and the work is ongoing at l
present. Meteorological Ir. formation is available in the Control Room via local instrumentation from j
the microwave tower,if needed. His information may also be obtained from strip chart recorders at the meteorological tower itself or from the nearby Patuxent Naval Air Station.
CAUSE OF MALFUNCTION The cause of the malfunction has not been determined.
PLANS FOR RESTORING T1!E CII ANNEL TO OPERAllLE STATUS MIDAS is presently being upgraded with a PC based system, replacing the old Sperry V-77 and teletype umts. The replacement, including the revision of several procedures to reflect the new methods of accessing data, is expected to be complete by August 10,1990.
