Subject:

Availability of Funds for Future Decommissioning of the University of

~

10CFR50.33(k).

LGentlemen:

Certification is herein submitted by the University of Arizona (Licensee) that a request will

be'made to the Arizona Board of Regents to appropriate funding from the Arizona State Legislature for the decommissioning of the University of Arizona' Research Reactor (UARR) at some future :

-date when a decision for final shutdown must be made.

As partC thd license renewal applicatica for the.UARR submitted to the NRC October 17

- 1988, an _ estimated cost of $450,000 in 1985 voltan, was projected to restore the UARR site to a

. condition of unrestricted use level.' This co".t is based on the contract cost of decommissioning the

~

x Virginia Tech Research. Reactor and et Northrop Corporation TRIGA Reactor as given by Chem Nuclear Systems, Inc.

.Using the Consumer Price Index from " Economic Indicators", published by the United States

' Government Printing Office, the decommissioning cost for the UARR as of April,1990 is estimated to be 5538,000. Ilowever, the projected cost escalation of a unit volume of low-level radioactive waste may exceed the Consumer Price Index and require further consideration when estimating the future cost of decommissioning the UARR.
