Dear Director:

The University of Utah Nuclear Engineering Laboratory hereby submits the following items concerning decommissionity of the two research nuclear reactors, the AGN 201 (License # R 25,

  • Docket 50 72) and the TR; GA hik I (License # R 126, Docket 50 407), in accordance with 10CFR50.33 and 50.75 and the NRC Rule entitled " General Requirements for Decommissioning Nuclear Facilities" (53FR24018,06/27/88).
1. AGN 201, R 25
a. The decommissioning costs of the AGN 201 am estimated to be $ 35,000. This cost includes only decontamination and removal of the AGN tank, removal and shipment of .

all fuel plates and control rods. This actual cost reflects principally labor and material charges for completing the stated activities. Other costs will be deferred to the TRIG A  ;

b, The University of Utah is a public Institution ofIligher Education of the Stue of Utah provided for under 10CFR50.75(e)(2)(iv). The funds necessary for the decommissioning of the AGN 201 have been allocated and decommissioning is in progress,

c. The AGN 201 shall be decommissioned -before significant changes in the .

decommissioning cost can occur. Therefore, a review of the decommissioning cost on a  !

periodic basis shall not be necessary.

2. TRIGA hik I, R 126
a. The decommissioning costs of the TRIGA hik I are estimated to be $ 350,000. This cost includes decontamination and removal of the TRIGA tank as well as removal and shipment of all fuel elements and activated structures. The facility shall be returned to unrestricted use. This cost is based on the costs encountered at the hilchigan State University for the decommissioning of their TRIGA hik 1. i
b. The University of Utah is a public Institution ofIllgher Education of the State of Utah provided for under 10CFR50.75(e)(2)(iv). The actual funds necessary for the decommissioning of the TRIGA hik I will be requested at the time when a decision to decommission is made.
c. _ The cost of decommissioning will be periodically reviewed at an interval not to exceed

- 5 years to account for changes in cost due to inflation. Cost adjustments shall be based

, on the consumer price index.
