'I hcVe been out of the office for %st of the months of May and June, and have.
only recently been abic to adr';ess your concerns.
The U.S. Nuclear hgulatory Cccoission does not possess a significant ancunt of information about bitumen-solidified waste; and in particular, neither inyself nor sqy colleagues are aware'of any specific esperitental data regarding the release of radioactivity f rom a fire involving bitun*en solidified waste.
This is basically because of the limited use of bituttn in the United States.
It is used much tore extensively in France and other European countries.
e You may wish to contact Advanced Technologies Incorporated (ATI), a vendor that has at least sone experience using bitumen (asphalt) as a solidification; medium.
(ATI's telephone nuir.ber is 704-376-5752). ATI has solidifed wastes at nuclear power plants using a volume reduction and biturr.in solidification process develcF.ed by the French CEA, licensed to the French engineering firm SGil, and sublicensed to ATI.
