Your office reviously extended NRC Certificate of Compliance USA /9853/B(
F for one-year to allow time for the DOE Packaging f(
Certification Office to complete an update of the Safety Analysis Report for Packaging (SARP) and to complete a confirmatory review of thez documentation in the SARP.

Although our-office had requested 18-mciith extensions for several ~other packagings undergoing a similar update / review, we felt that the 9853 j
design would take significantly less than a year's time to complete we therefore requested only a one-year extension.
4 Althougn the review process is going well, we can now see' that-the one-year extension was not enough and we will be unable to meet the current expiration date of October 31, 1990, ia l
We are therefore requesting an additional extension of one-year to October 31, 1991.
<0ur confirmatory review has found nothing that affectsLthe safety of the l
package design. The problems uncovered so far are deficiencies in the.
L SARP where documentation is incomplete.
