Docket No. 50-364 Director, Nuclear Reactor Regulation U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D. C.
20555 Attention:
Mr. S. A. Varga Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant - Unit 2 Status of License Condition 2.C.(19)(d) Exemption Request Gentlemen:
By letter dated February 8,1982, Alabama Power Company l
submitted an amendment to License NPF-8 requesting modification of l
License Condition 2.C.(19)(d).
At the time of this request it was our plan to replace the turbine rotors in Unit 1 at the fourth refueling outage (scheduled in early 1983).
These rotors, which would be upgraded, were planned to be installed in the Unit 2 l
turbine during the second refueling outage.
As stated in the l
February letter, the requested modification to License NPF-8 would I
be consistant with scheduled outage activities and the Westinghouse low pressure (L.P.) rotor inspection program.
At the time of the referenced submittal, Unit I was in an unscheduled outage due to a generator failure which required major stator rewinding.
Subsequent to the License Condition modification request submittal, Westinghouse recommended that Alabama Power Company perform a detailed inspection of the generator during the i
fourth outage on Unit 1 as a followup to the field rewind.
Since Alabama Power Company plans to comply with the Westinghouse recommendation, there is not suf ficient outage time available during the fourth refueling outage to replace the rotors, as initially planned, and to concurrently perform the generator inspection.

Director, Nuclear Reactor Regulations Page 2 U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Based on the above, Alabama Power Company plans to replace rotors during the first refueling of Unit 2 in compliance with the present License Condition 2.C.(19)(d).
This change in plans, necessitated by the recent Westinghouse recommendation for the Unit 1 generator inspection, is being submitted for your informa-tion.
Alabama Power Company realizes that in all probability this will invalidate the need for the requested Unit 2 License Condition modification.
However, it is our understanding that the request is essentially processed, and therefore it is requested that the Unit 2 License Condition modification request be granted to cover all contingencies.
Yours very truly, lY Y
