N. J. Schlicht Plant Manager P.O. Box 10 910 Truman Parkway Bay City, Michigan 48707 Centlemen:
This refers to your June 10, 1982, telephone conversation with M. J. Oestmann and M. C. Schumacher of this office regarding the thorium-magnesium alloy material currently in your possession. The material, which is slightly radioactive, was discovered by NRC inspectors, during a May 13, 1982, radiation survey of your building. We understand that you have no use for the material and wish to be rid of it.
We recommend that you contact Dr. Lawrence Rampy of Dow Chemical Company, Midland, Michigan, who has indicated to us that Dow is willing to assist you in ita disposal. We recomend that you contact Dr. Rampy at 517/636-6260.
A copy of the report of our May inspection will be sent to you under separate cover.
If you have any questions regarding this matter, please contact Dr. Oestmann, Mr. Schumacher or me at 312/932-2500. We appreciate your cooperation.
