XI -- Inspection and Evaluation of Nuclear Fuel Services High-Level Waste Storage Syste,m WORK PERIOD:

May 1982 WORK OBJECTIVE:

The objective of this project is to determine the condition of the storage tanks and vaults at Nuclear Fuel Services

.(NFS), West Valley, New York.

ACTIVITY 1.0 PROGRAM MANAGEMENT Progress A response to the West Valley Nuclear Services (WVNS) request for proposal was completed and transmitted to West Valley as scheduled.

Problems None Planned Work Continue Program Management efforts in support of program activities.

ACTIVITY 2.0 TANK AND VAULT INSPECTION Progress The large area scanner which supports the annulus inspection and ultrasonic testing equipment was reassembled in the development laboratory. Additional testing and debugging of the equipment was performed. Minor modifications were made to enhance the assembly and operability of the equipment in the field.

Problems Complications with the waste tank inspection equipment occurred during final testing.

Consequently, shipment of the equipment to West Valley was post-poned impacting the June 7,1982 schedule start for the field operations.

Both the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and West Valley Nuclear Services (WVNS) were appraised of the problems and concurred to delay the field operations one week.
