Dear Mr. Haynes:

The continuity testing of the thirty-eight (38) Type W-2 Control Switches as committed to in our responses (References 1, 2, and 3) has been performed on a monthly basis and at other required times. The results of this testing program to date have indicated no failures of the identified control switches.

The man _!acturer of these switches, Westinghouse Switchgear Division, has performed and completed a thorough evaluation of the W-2 switch with spring return to neutral as a result of the reported failure. The manufacturer has concluded that the malfunction of the W-2 switches was not attributable to any generic design failure. This conclusion was confirmed by independent tests at the Westinghouse Research Laboratories.

It is the Authority's position based on the results of the testing program to date and the evaluation performed by Westinghouse Electric Corporation that it is not necessary to install the status lights as committed to in our September 12, 1980 response (Reference 1).

Therefore, the testing program being performed on Type W-2 Control Switches as committed to in our referenced responses will be terminated on August 1, 1982 unless otherwise notified.

Very truly yours, n.

J. C. Brons JAS:ms Resident Manager J
