SUMMARY

OF THE JUNE 14, 1982 MEETING WITH BG8E REGARDING RECENT STEAM GENERATOR TUBE DAMAGE AT CALVERT CLIFFS UNIT 1 On June 14, 1982, a meeting was held in Room P-110 of the Phillips Building, Bethesda, Maryland. Enclosure 1 is a list of attendees. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss with representatives of BG&E, the details of steam generator tube damage which resulted from a recent " rim cut" performed at Calvert Cliffs Unit 1.

The presentation made by BG&E indicated that the rim cut procedure, the separation of a SG partial support plate from the SG structure, is recommended by Combustion Engineering upon onset of tube denting, to prevent further damage to the plate. BG&E described the rim cut, per-formed on Calvert Cliffs Unit 1 including: use of mock-up for training, job setup, rin cutting, and recovery of cut material. BG&E described how the damaged tubes were discovered including the use of helium leak detection and profilometry. BG8E indicated that a total of four tubes had been damaged but only one had significant leakage. These tubes were located as follows: three tubes in SG 11 and one tube in SG 12, all four of which were in the vicinity of Support Plate 9 Support Plates 9 and 10 underwent the rim cut (see Enclosure 2). From the location of the damage, BG&E concluded that the damage was in the area of the support plate mounting lugs. Cutting of these lugs requires manual, multiple pass, cutting and was most likely the cause of the damage.

At the conclusion of the meeting, BGAE was requested to respond to s question regarding the processing of analytic data in the vicinity of the support plates and also on the evaluation of tube data. BG8E committed to inform the NRC of corrective measures to be taken, regarding l

the rim cut procedure, prior to use of the procedure at Calvert Cliffs
