TENNESSEE VALLEY AUTHORITY CH ATTANOOGA. TENNESSEE 374o1 400 Chestnut Street Tower II, June 23, 1982 Mr. Harold R. Denton, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555
Dear Mr. Denton:
In the Matter of the
)
Docket Nos. 50-259 Tennessee Valley Authority
)
50-260 50-296 In discussions with your staff TVA was requested to participate in a study related to NUREG-0705, " Identification of New Unresolved Safety Issues Relating to Nuclear Power Plants," Task A-47, Safety Implications of Control Systems. Specifically, your staff indicated that the Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant would be used as the model for all General Electric (Boiling Water Reactor) plants on this issue.
At the request of your staff, we met on June 2,1982 to discuss in detail why the study was being conducted and information that would be needed by NRC and its contractors. The purpose of the meeting was to provide TVA with information necessary to evaluate the impact of participating in the study thereby allowing TVA to make an informed decision.
We were not encouraged by the meeting in Chattanooga on June 2, W
1982, as to the advantages of TVA participation in this study..e.
did not achieve a good understanding of the scope of the program and were unable to identify any concrete problem areas for the program to focus on.
Also, there appears to be a potential for a very significant impact on our manpower if TVA participates in this effort.
