l INTRODUCTION The ecology of York Haven Pond near the Three Mile Island Nuclear Station (TMINS) has been under investigation since February 1974.

Studies initiated in April 1974 include analysis of ambient water quality, ichthyoplankton (far-field), ichthyoplanktan entrainment, macroinvertebrates, fish population dynamics, impingement of fishes, creel survey, and thern:a1 plume mapping.

This report discusses the progress of investigations conducted in May 1982.

2 COMPLIANCE WITH ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS (ETS)

Objective: To determine compliance with the nonradiological (aquatic) envirenmental monitoring programs specified in sections 3.1.1. a. (4 ), 3.1. 2.a., 4.2, and 4.6.1 of the ETS and to insure that said programs are performed as detailed in the Generation Procedures Fbnual.

Progress:

Compliance with all programs specified in the ETS and detailed in the Procedures Document was achieved in May (Table 1).

A program by program summary of the progress for May follows.

MACR 0 INVERTEBRATES Objectives: To describe the diversity and distribution of the benthic macroinvertebrates at the five benthos sampling stations in the vicinity of TMINS.

Progress: Replicate (4) benthos samples were taken on 10 and 24 Fby (Tabic 1).

Enumeration, determination of dry weights, and identifi-cation of specimens have been completed through 10 May.

ICHTHYOPLANKTON Objectives:

(1) To determine the species composition, abundance, and distribution of ichthyoplankton in York Haven Pond; and (2) To investigate ichthyoplankton entrained at TMINS Unit I and 2 Intakes.

Far-Field Progress:

Day / night sampics were taken at the 14 stations on 4, 11, 18, and 25 May (Table 1).

A total of 4,928 larvae was taken (4,664 at night and 264 during the day). All samples have been sorted and identified. Most specimens (3,250) were taken at night on 18 May when the common carp predominated.

Species taken included the gizzard shad, common carp, comely shiner, spottail shiner, spotfin shiner, black-nose dace, fallfish, quillback, white sucker, shorthead redhorse, rock bass,

3 pumpkinseed/ bluegill, smallmouth bass, black crappie, tessellated darter, banded darter, ahield. darter, and walleye.

' Average nightly water temperatures were 17.5 C on 4 May, 18.3 C on

~11 May, 23.5 C on 18 May, and 17.3 C on 25 May.

Entrainment Progress:

Ichthyoplankton surveys were conducted at Units 1 and 2 on 11-12 and 25-26 May (Table 1).

At Unit 1, 136 ichthyoplanktors (64 surface, 72 oblique) were taken on 11-12 May. The spottail shiner, shield darter, and banded darter were the most abundant species.

The 25-25 May sample yielded 77 ichthyoplanktors (30 surface, 47 oblique).

frequently taken were the banded darter, spottail shiner, and quillback.-

At Unit 2, 58 ichthyoplanktors (36 surface, 22 oblique) were taken on 11-12 May.

The spottail shiner and banded darter were the most frequently collected species.

The 25-26 May collection yielded 47 specimens (25 surface, 22 oblique).

The most abundant fishes were the banded darter and quillback.

4 TRAPNET Objectives:

(1) To determine the distribution and relative abundance I

of fishes in the Three Mile Island area vulnerable to trapnet; (2) To provide specimens for movements studies; (3) To monitor the occurrence of~

diseased fishes; (4) To provide specimens for radiation analysis; and (5)

To determine reproductive status for fishes'throughout;the year.-

Progress:

Samples were taken on 3-5 and 17-19 May ('lable 1).

One l

hundred fifty-nine fish of 12 species were taken on 3-5 May (Tabic 2).

Most fish (95), most species (11), and greatest biomass (9.19 kg) occurred at Stationf9B2. Common fishes included the pumpkinseed (29.6% of the total catch), white crappic (22.0%), and black crappie (17.6%). One Lepomis hybrid (green sunfish X pumpkinseed) was collected at Station 11A2.

Three brown bullhead, two channel catfish, and one rock bass were tagged.

One previously tagged rock bass was recaptured. Leeches parasitized four channel catfish and one pumpkinseed.

Eight pumpkinseed exhibited 3

exophthalmia of one or both eyes. -Anchor worms parasitized 4 pumpkinseed, I redbreast sunfish, and I white crappie.

Two male common carp were ripe.

A total of 345 fish of 11 species was taken on 17-19 May (Table 3).-

Most fish (210) were taken at Station 9B2, greatest biomass (8.55 kg) at-l 1A3, and most-kpecies (7) at 1A3 and 9B2.

The pumpkinseed was the most

numerous species at all stations and comprised 82.0% of the total catch.

Three rock bhps and two channel catfish were tagged.

One previously tagged rock bass was recaptured. Anchor worms parasitized three pumpkin-seed and four pumpkinseed exhibited exophthalmia. Leeches parasitized one white catfish and one pumpkinseed.- One pumpkinseed exhibited scoliosis (lateral ficxures of the spinal column).

Over 40% of the pumpkinseed collected were ripe although most females were just becoming ripe and did

'not appear quite ready to spawn.

Ripe male pumpkinseed outnumbered ripe females by over 2:1. ~ 0ther ripe fishes included 1 female common carp, 3

1 female redbreast sunfish, 1 male bluegill, 2 male white crappie, and i

three male black crappie.

Objectives:

(1) To determine the species composition of fish upstream l

and downstream from the TMINS Discharge vulnerable to seine; (2) To determine the relative condition factor for important species; and (3) To determine the reproductive status for fishes throughout the year.

l Progress: Collections were made at the 10 stations on 3 and 17 May (Table 1). A total of 4,877 fish of 16 species was taken on 3 May (Table 4).

The spotfin shiner was the most abundant species.at all stations and comprised 85.5% of the total catch.

5 Slight black spot infestations were observed on 133 spotfin shiner, 36 bluntnose minnow, 1 common shiner,1 swallowtail shiner, and 1 banded killifish. Glochidia parasitized 6 spottail shiner and 3 spotfin shiner, an anchor worm was observed on 1 mimic shiner, 2 bluntnose minnow had proter, 7 cysts, 3 mimic shiner were pugheaded, and 1 smallmouth bass was parasitized by a leech. All nine tessellated darter collected were gravid and one male pumpkinseed was in breeding coloration.

A total of 5.360 fish of 14 species was taken on 17 May (Table 5).

Most fish (1,460) and most species (8) were taken at Station 10B5 while greatest biomass (361.2 g) occurred at 1A2.

The spotfin shiner was the most abundant species at all stations except 4A2 and comprised 87.6% of the total catch.

The bluntnose minnow predominated at 4A2.

Slight black spot infestations were observed on 92 spotfin shiner, 56 bluntnose minnow, 2 comely shiner, 1 central stoneroller, 1 swallowtail shiner, and 1 fallfish.

Two bluntnose minnow bore protozoan cysts.

Two spotfin shiner exhibited kyphosis (abnormal backward spinal curvature).

One female tesse11ated darter was gravid, one male bluntnose minnow was tuberculate, and many female bluntnose minnow appeared gravid.

No pattern of parasite infection or anomaly was observed with respect to the location of TMINS for either Fby collection.

IMPINGEMENT OF FISH Objectives:

(1) To determine the numbers and species impinged on the river water intake screens; (2) To determine day-night differences in l

impingement f requency; and (3) To determine the extent of mortality of impinged fish.

Progress: 1mpingement surveys were conducted on 6-7, 13-14, 18-19, and 27-28 lby at the TMINS Unit 1 and 2 Intakes (Table 1).

Unit 1 impinged one yellow bullhead and one channel catfish that together

6 weighed 36.1 g (Tables 6 through 13). Both fish were juvenile, alive, and were collected during a 1200 h survey period. The estimated impinge-ment for Unit 1 for May was 16 fish weighing 279.8 g (0.6 lb).

Unit 2 impinged 10 fish of 6 species weighing 477.2 g (Tables 14

-through 21). Most fish were juvenile and dead. Fish numbers and biomass were highest during the 6-7 and 13-14 May surveys, respectively. The estimated impingement.for Unit 2 was 78 fish weighing 3,698.3 g (8.2 lb).

The total estimated impingement at TMINS during May was 94 fish weighing 3,978.1 g (8.8 lb).

ELECTROFISHING Objectives:

(1) To provide specimens for radiation analysis and 3

movements studies; and (2) To determine the relative abundance of fishes

f vulnerable to electrofishing in various parts of York Haven Pond.

Progress:

Sampling was conducted on four nights in May (Table 1).

Twenty-four collections in 12 zones yielded 977 specimens of 22 species and one hybrid-(Table 22).

The pumpkinseed (293 specimens) smallmouth bass (158), redbreast sunfish (141), and bluegill (85) were most abundant.

A total of 70 fish was tagged for movements studies.

. MOVEMENTS OF FISHES l-3 Objective:

To determine if fishes in waters receiving the TMINS j

effluent mix with fishes from other areas.

t Progress: A total of 81 fish was tagged and'18 previously tagged fish were recaptured in May.

One tagged smallmouth bass was found dead t

on the west shore of TMI, 1900 m downstream from the Discharge.

Two smallmouth bass made upstream movements of 5.2 and 17.7 km, one mo ed 1.8 km down-stream, three made complex movements (0.5 - 4.9 km), and four were recaptured in the same areas in which they were tagged.

CREEL SURVEYS Objectives:

(1) To determine the extent and success of sport fishing; and (2) To determine information on angler residence and use of catch.

l Progress:

Creel surveys were conducted in all areas on 2, 11, 15, and 26 May (Table 1).

The 797 anglers interviewed fished 1,440.00 hours0 days <br />0 hours <br />0 weeks <br />0 months <br /> and caught 2,213 fish (Tables 23 through 26).

The actual harvest was 708 fish or 32.0% of the total catch. The mean catch per effort (c/e) was 1.54.

Most anglers (310) occurred at the General Reservoir.

The largest total catch (729) and highest c/e (4.02) were recorded at the West Dam.

Most fish kept (237) and hours fished (534.75) occurred at the York Haven Generating Station.

Smallmouth bass (990 specimens) were caught in greatest numbers.

Other common species caught included the rock bass (360), valleye (350),

channel catfish (187), and unidentified sunfishes (65).

Approximately 62% of the anglers interviewed lived in York or Dauphin counties. Most of the anglers reported they eat some of their catch.

AMBIENT WATER QUALITY Objective:

To determine concentrations of selected water quality parameters in ambient river areas and the TMINS effluent.

Progress: Water quality sampics were collected on 10 and 24 May at the five river stations (Tablu 1); data are currently being analyzed.

The water quality samples collected on 12 April have now been analyzed. Values for pH, turbidity, sulfate, and total zine were

highest at Station IAI (located upstream of the TMINS Discharge). Water temperature and total dissolved solids were highest at Station 9B1 (1975 m downstream of the Discharge),
