Dear Mr. Denton:
This is to provide the information requested in reference (a) regarding the Human Factors Engineering Branch (HFEB) review of the control room design at Braidwood.
The Braidwood control room is a duplicate of the Byron control room so any discussion of human factors work must include both plants.

)g)j As indicated in reference (d) Commonwealth Edison is conducting a Preliminary Design Assessment (PDA) o f the Byron /
Braidwond control room design to provide a basis for issuance of i
operating licenses for these units.
A Detailed Control Room Design Review (DCRDR) is planned but completion will not be required for initial licensing.
The bulk of this effort has been completed and documented in the report submitted in reference (c).

The Staff's review of this report and the results of the Byron site audit were documented in reference (b).
The systems and items which were not available for review during the HFEB visit were identified.
Additional PDA work is in progress for those items and for the Braidwood site-specific differences.
A supplement to the PDA report for the Byron additional items and the Braidwood site-specific items is presently scheduled to be sent to the NRC by January 1,1983.
As indicated in reference (f), the Byron Unit 1 schedule is keyed to fuel loading in April 1983.
The schedule is being reviewed and should be revised within the next month.
More detailed schedule information which was requested regarding projected completion of both control rooms will be provided at that time.
As indicated in reference (g), we are preparing a plan to be used in DCRDR's for all Commonwealth Edison nuclear generating stations.
We are aware that further guidance is in preparation and have suspended work on this plan pending receipt o f such guidance.
Our intentions regarding this plan will be made known within 90 days of receipt of further guidance.
Please address questions regarding this matter to this office.
