Subject:

Interim Report of 10Cm50.55(c) on Defective Pipe Support Strut Swivel Dearings (#68)

Dear Mr. Keppler:

On May 14,1982, Detroit Edison's Mr. H.A. Walker, Supervisor-Construction Quality Assurance, telephoned Mr. H. Wescott of NRC Region III to report on a problem with defective pipe support strut swivel bearings at the Fermi 2 site.

Detroit Edison had determined that.the Fermi 2 Project had a problem with pipe support strut swivel bearings. This was the same type of problem described in IE Circular 81-05.

IE Circular 81-05 states: "The specific deficiencies identified involved the clamp end of the sway strut beccming loose, and possibly being disen-gaged fran the bushing. This could result in a large gap in the support system not accounted for in the original analysis."

The defect was discovered during an investigation initiated as the result of this circular. As of the present time, nine (9) supports have been determined to be affected. Additional investigation is being conducted to determine the extent of the problem.

l This is being reported as a 50.55(e) since the IE Circular does not require j a written response frcm the utility.

l Another report on this item, either interim or final, is scheduled to be

! sent to you on or before October 8,1982. If you have questions concerning i

this matter, please contact Mr. H.A. Walker, Supervisor-Construction Quality l Assurance.

i l Very truly yours, b
