June 17, 1982 Director Division of Operating Reactors Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Comnission Washington, D.C. 20555 Attn: Mr. John F. Stolz, Chief, Operating Reactors Branch 44

Subject:

Docket NO. 50-394, License No. R-121 Third Progress Report for Dismantling Plan With the close of the academic year last week, and the fact that I will not be on campus on a regular basis until Septenber 18, 1982, this Progress Report will serve to keep the various parties concerned informed of our plans and schedule. At this time it would appear that we would not be able to unload fuel until Septenber of this year for several reasons.

The campus Radiation Safety Committee is now in the process of interviewing candidates for the position of Radiation Safety Officer, which we hope to have filled with the appropriate person who can help us in the dismantling procedure and shipment of spent fuel about August 1st. Another setback involves our notificatica last week that the vendor who was to supply us with certified shipping containers would not be able to supply them. I am now in the process of locating a new supplier, hopefully on the West Coast and have made several inquiries already.

I am still in need of your help in getting shipping instructions for the spent fuel once we have gotten it packaged. I would refer you to my letter of March 2,1982, addressed to Malcolm Theisen (Director, Weapons Division, DOE, Oak Ridge, Tennessee) since I have still have had no response to this letter from that office.

On June lith, I attempted to call Peter B. Erickson of your office, but was unsuccessful, since I did not have his correct phone number and would appreciate your including it in your response.

Docket No. 50-394, License No. R-121 Third Progress Report for Dismantling Plan June 17, 1982 Page 2 On June 21, 1982, I will begin a temporary assignment for Pacific Gas and Electric Company at their Diablo Canyon Power Plant and do not know yet where I can be reached by telephone at that location.

Your best procedure would be to correspond by mail at this time as I will be in to the campus office several times each week to check on such matters.

Sincerely,
