During the past year we have been working with the Staff in attempting to provide information sufficient to demonstrate that the upgraded Midland Plant AFW system met the NRC criteria for system unavailability (Reference (a)).
When it became apparent that no two pump systems would be acceptable to the Staff, CP Co decided to commit to the installation of a third auxiliary feedwater pump for each unit by the end of each units second refueling outage (Reference (b)).
Enclosure (1) is a revision to the original AFW reliability analysis submitted on February 28, 1981 (Reference (c)) in response to the NUREG-0737 Item II.E.1.1.
This analysis shows that the 3 pump AFW system unavailability is clearly in the range of the unavailability goal set forth in SRP Section 10.4.9.
In addition, the analysis has been revised to show the unavailability for both the 2 and 3 pump systems at 15 minutes which would still ensure adequate core cooling.

In summary, we believe the Staff will concur that our proposed three pump AFW -
system clearly meets the SRP reliability criterion, provides the additional margin of safety sought by the Staff and is thus satisfactory. With this i
submittal the Staff should be able to close-out the followup requirement of SER Section 10.4.9.
