Subject:
Final Report of 10CFR50.55(e) Item on Defective GE-ISSE Welds (#31)
Dear Mr. Keppler:
This is Detroit Edison's final report on the defective GE-I&SE welds problem.
The problem was originally reported to Mr. P.A. Barrett of NRC Region III by Detroit Edison's Mr. T.A. Alessi, Director-Project Quality Assurance on i
October 24, 1980.
At that time, a review of nineteen (19) radiographs in the G-33 system, which is a drain line to the reactor vessel, revealed problems with seven (7) out of the nineteen (19) welds. These radiographs were previously accepted by a contractor that had since left the site.
Following an investigation, it was determined that additional defects had been noted in reviewing radiographs of other previously accepted GE-I&SE welds. The welds were jet pump diffuser to adapter welds and safe end rrodificaticn welds.
l Repair work on the defective welds has been completed. The welds are now acceptable.
If you have questions concerning this matter, please contact Mr. H.A. Walker, Supervisor-Construction Quality Assurance.
Very truly yours, q
