Dear Mr. Boggs:

Attached for your comment, use and transmittal to member companies is Draft Staff Technical Position Paper WM_8203, "Hydrogeologic Characterization of Uranium Solution Mine and Mill Tailings Disposal Sites." The position provides guidelines for hydrogeologic analyses, acceptable to the Uranium Recovery Licensing Branch staff, in performing site suitability studies of potential uraaium solution mines and mill tailings disposal sites.

Included are lists of recommended areas where hydrogeologic data should be collected, and acceptable methods and sources for obtaining hydrogeologic and related data. Also included as appendices is guidance on applications of borehole geophysics to site suitability studies, and the determination of hydraulic properties of hydrostratigraphic units.

The purpose of this draft position paper is to expedite licensing by informing NRC applicants of current licensing staff positions related to the technical subject matter and it is to be utilized immediately as interim guidance until a formal regulatory guide is developed.

We would appreciate receiving any comments you may have on this draft position paper.

Please provide your comments by July 15, 1982.

If you have any questions, please contact Mr. F.W. Ross (427-4533), of my staff.

Sincerely, Ross A. Scarano, Chief Uranium Recovery Licensing Branch Division of Waste Management
