H. Dircks The U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Connission has recently approved designation of the Pressurized Themal Shock concern as Unresolved Safety Issue A-49 pursuant to Section 210 of the Energy Reo inization Act of 1974, as anended in Decenber 1977.
Section 210 defines an Unresolved Safety 1ssue as "...a natter affecting a nunber of nuclear power plants that poses inpnetant questions concerning the adequacy of existing safety requirements for which a final resolution has not yet been developed and that invelves conditions not likely to be acceptable over the lifetine of the plants affectrd."
The MP,C staff's detailed basis for designation of the Pressurized Themal Shock concern as an Unresolved Safety Issue is contained in SECY 81-637 (Enclosure 1).
The scone, resources and schedule for resolution of this Unresolved Safety Issue are defined in the Task Action Plan which is enclosed (Enclosure 2).
The staff expects to reach an interin resolutten in June 1982. The final generic resolution, including issuance of Regulatory Requirecents, is scheduled for the sunrer of le83.
