Dear Mr. Youngblood:
We have completed our review of the Draf t Supplement to the Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) related to the operation of Enrico Fenni Atomic Power Plant, Unit 2.
This supplement was written to address comments made by the Department of. Interior on the Draft EIS regarding radionuclide exposure of persons living near Lake Erie follow-ing an accident at Enrico Fermi, Unit 2.
We have reviewed the assessment of the postulated accident and the potential exposure of an individual and the population surrounding the Great Lakes. Models and assumptions used to evaluate the magnitude of atmospheric radioactive releases provide an accurate assessment of these impacts. We concur with the staff's conclusions that the potential for increased cases of cancer and additional genetic effects will be small due to an accident at Fermi.
We have rated the Draf t Supplement to the Final EIS as LO-1.
This means we do not have any environmental objections to the operation of Fermi Unit 2.
We also find the draf t supplemental document has provided sufficient information to assess impacts.
In accordance with our responsibilities under Section 309 of the Clean Air Act, a notice of the availability of our comments will be published in the Federal Register.
When the final supplement is published, please send us two copies.
