Office of Inspection and Enforcement RII: JPO Region II - Suite 3100 50-321/50-366 101 Marietta Street, NW I&E Bulletin Atlanta, Georgia 30303 79-09 ATTENTION: Mr. James P. O'Reilly GENTLEfEN:
On May 16,1979, Georgia Power Company (GPC) responded to I&E Bulletin 79-09 which was transmitted by an NRC letter dated April 17, 1979, and concerned General Electric Company AK-2 breakers.
Action item 3.a.
requested licensees to:
Establish and adhere to a preventive maintenance schedule regarding the subject circuit breakers.
Our May 16, 1979 response stated that the preventive maintenance procedures for the General Electric (GE) AK-2 Dreakers were written to conform with "the manufacturers inspection frequency."
We wish to clarify the information previously provided for our inspection program surveillance frequency.
The Plant Hatch preventive maintenance procedures require twenty percent (2CN) of the AK-2 breakers to be inspected per year with all breakers being inspected every five years.
We have found, through Southern Company system experience, that this inspection interval is appropriate for the subject breakers in their application.
This inspection frequency has proven itself to be both practical and sufficient in maintaining these breakers.
By performing a number of breaker inspections each year any generic problems, which would warrant increasing the inspection frequency, can be identified and the frequency adjusted as necessary.
We have encountered no problems as a result of our inspections and plan to continue with the present program.
