Attn:

Mr. Robert A. Clark, Chief Operating Reactors Branch #3 W

Division of Licensing

Subject:

Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant Unit No. 2, Docket No. 50-318 Supplemental Information to Request for Amendment

Reference:

BG&E letter dated 4/12/82 from A. E. Lundvall, Jr. to R. A. Clark, Request for Amendment Gentlemen:

The referenced letter contains our request for a relaxation of ACTION Statement 3.7.6.1.(b) of the Calvert Cliffs Unit 2 Technical Specifications to allow one air conditioning unit at a time to be out of service for up to 21 days during the period 4/17/82 - 7/21/82 to permit scheduled modifications.

The purpose of this letter is to confirm that the design basis of the redundant air conditioning units has been calculated to be such that a single unit is capable of providing sufficient cooling to keep the Control Room temperature and humidity within design limits during normal operation and thus ensure compliance with habitability requirements and temperature limit requirements for the most limiting equipment.

We have determined that, for the period of this reouest during which one -

/

0p reactor will be shut down and cooled down, a single air conditioning unit will be p0 l

sufficient to meet the above criteria. It should also be noted that our maintenance l

records show that the air conditioning units have a reliable operating history with the f D majority of failures being due to minor problems which were readily corrected using jj L available spare parts. In addition, the modifications will be made prior to the hottest W/cAfG g part of the summer season, reducing the heat load on the system and enhancing the ability of the ventilation system to perform its other design function of cooling the [ Y600 00 Control Room directly with outside air.
