Dear Mr. Chairman:
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has reviewed the General Accounting Office (GA0) report entitled, " Federal Agencies Negligent in Collecting Debts Arising from Audits,"
and generally supports the GA0 recommendations.
The question of comments on specific deficiencies does not arise, since NRC was not one of the seven agencies selected for audit.
With regard to agency actions, on February 22, 1982 NRC issued a final rule establishing debt collection procedures that comply with Federal collection regulations and Office of Management and Budget guidelines.
These procedures provide for the imposition of a late payment charge on debts that are not paid on time.
Procedures are also in place for establishing a debt for disallowed costs when the contracting officer initially determines that such indebtedness exists.
Sincerely,
, (AT*~f
