Subject:
Docket No. 50-394, License No. R-121 Second Progress Report for Dismantling Plan Since a nunber of people in various agencies are concerned with the time schedule for fuel removal from our N;N-201 reactor, this Second Progress Report will serve to keep them informed. There have been certain delays in order to comply with new regulations, as well as instrument problems. Tentatively the schedule is now for spent fuel removal about the middle of May, 1982.
The original linear rate meter on the reactor console, which is one of the two channels required to be operable during spent fuel removal according to the previously approved dismantling plan, has been sent to the Electronics Department (on campus) for repair.
We are in the process of re-installing it and calibrating it in hopes that we can get it working satisfactorily. Preliminary arrangements have also been made to obtain two shipping containers for packaging the spent fuel disks. The necessary documentation for a quality-assurance program is now being prepared for approval by the NRC, Operating Reactor Branch, but is complicated by the fact that the campus Radiation Safety Officer recently resigned and is now employed in that capacity at the University of Southern f California. We are in hopes that he can return for several days /
at the time we are ready to remove fuel. j /g Another reason for delay is the prospective absence of our licensed Senior Reactor Operator, R. Fisher, of PG&E (Diablo Canyon Project), who will be working at the Trojan Nuclear Power Plant in Oregon until May 5th.

Docket No. 50-394, License No. R-121 Second Progress Report for Dismantling Plan April 14, 1982 Page 2 To date, we still have not received answers to the several questions raised in my letter of March 2, 1982, addressed to Malcolm Theisen (Director, Weapons Division, DOE, Oak Ridge, Tennesse) in connection with the shipping instructions for the fuel once we have gotten it packaged. We would appreciate your help in getting this information in the near term.
