COMPANY'S GALVANIZED A325 BOLTS - HTRD-50-518/81-28, -520/81-27 The subject deficiency was initially reported to NRC-0IE, Region II, Inspector P. A. Taylor on October 29, 1981 as NCR HTA HPP 8103 Applicability to 10 CFR Part 21 was determined to be nonreportable as discussed with Inspector Taylor on November 5, 1981. Our first and second interim reports were submitted on November 23, 1981 and February 10, 1982, respectively. In accordance with paragraph 50.55(e) of 10 CFR Part 50, this letter constitutes our third interim report on the subject deficiency. A sample of galvanized bolts were tested by Singleton Materials Laboratory (SME) to determine the cause of bolt stripping. The test report (SME 820208 005) shows that the bolts exhibited decarburization of the threads in combination with a possible bolt dimensional problem. The bolts are undergoing additional testing for compliance with ASTM A325 and ANSI B1.1 dimensional specifications by SME. We anticipate transmitting our next report by June 1, 1982.
