Dear Dr. Nelson:

This is in response to your letter dated January 3,1982, in which you requested, pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act, documents regarding the disposal of radioactive wastes on the property of the Veterans Administration (VA) in West Los Angeles.

Appendix A is a listing of documents which were found to be responsive to items 1 through 8 of your request.

These documents are enclosed.

In regard to item 9, there were no responses to the May 14, 1981, letter you reference. The material transmitted to Regior V was for information purposes only.

All documents from our files relating to radioactive wastes at the VA are being supplied to you.

These documents cover everything associated with item 10 of your request.

In item 11 you refer to the maps of the burial areas for radwaste at the VA.

These maps are included throughout our response to items 1 thru 5, and 7.

j The files of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) only go back to the establishment of the regulatory function in the old Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), which took place in the 1950's.

Prior to that time, the control of radioactive materials was under the jurisdiction of the General Manager of the AEC.

This function is presently in the Department of Energy (DOE).

If there was any use of materials at the VA Hospital I

prior to our involvement, DOE may have the information you are seeking.

We suggest you contact them directly.

As agreed, you will bear the reproduction costs for your request.

The charge for reproducing the enclosed 540 pages at five cents ($0.05) per page, as specified in 10 CFR 9.14(b), is $27.00.

You will be billed for this amount by our Division of Accounting.
