Docket No. 71-9161 Encl to ltr dtd: MAY 2 7 fM)

DRAWINGS 1.

It is not apparent from the drawing how the radiographic device will be secured within the overpack. Provide a drawing which shows the general arrangement, dimensions, and materials of construction of the insert retainer.

2.

Provide an engineering drawing showing dimensions and the specifications i

for the 10-gallon drum, lid, and bolt closure ring.

STRUCTURAL 1.

The requirements of 10 CFR 571.32(a) for load resistance should be addressed.

2.

The requirements of 10 CFR 571.35 for the normal conditions of transport should be addressed (including protection to the urethane foaminsidethedrum).

3.

Evaluate the performance of the lock ring bolt for the 30-foot drop test followed by the 40-inch puncture test. The consequence of bolt damage, if any, for a drop onto the bolt must be considered in terms of any reduction in package effectiveness.

4.

Justify that the radiographic device tested within the overpack represents the weakest design (structurally) and the drop orientations chosen represents the worst case for the subsequent fire test.

This should take into consideration bottoming out of the urethane foam and protrusions on the radiographic devices planned to be shipped in the overpack.
