Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

The purpose of this letter is to provide an updated response for I.E.Bulletin 79-15.

The last update response, which was dated July 31, 1981, addressed River Water pump bearing failure and the installation of a Sullectron Water Treater in the Service Water pump lube and cooling water supply lines.

The Sullectron Water Treater has been installed and is in operation.

In addition, the carbon steel piping in the lube and cooling water supply lines has been replaced with stainless steel to further inhibit the buildup of mineral deposits and the resulting restriction in water flow.

The buildup of mineral deposits no longer appears to be a significant problem.

The mean time between failures of the river water pump lower bell section bearings has been inadequate.

This is attributable to the pumps operating too far out on their head curve.

The architect engineers have completed an evaluation of recomaendations made by the pump vendor and have submitted proposed solutions.

Alabama Power Company has reviewed these proposed solutions and requested additional work which is presently being accomplished by the architect engineers.

i Mr. James P. O'Reilly, Director May 19, 1982 U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Page 2 At the present time, it is anticipated that a solution will be chosen in July 1982.

At that time a schedule for implementation will be developed.

If there are any questions, please advise.

Yours very truly, e
