Dear Mr. Keppler:
This is Detroit Edison's final report on the Control Rod Drive (CRD)
Housing Assemblies. The problem was originally reported to Mr. J. Konklin of NRC Region III by Detroit Edison's Mr. H.A. Walker, Supervisor-Construc-tion Quality Assurance, on January 26, l' d.
A Fermi site contractor had noted chips or burrs on the inside of the CRD housing assemblies. These burrs were fastened to the metal underneath the shoulder on the inside of the CRD assemblies, and appeared to be a lack of ccuplete machining of the inside surface. These irregularities did not affect the mating of the CRD thermal sleeve which fits inside in contact with this surface. This had been previously determined by the thermal sleeve trial fit. Results of Detroit Edison's investigation indicate that with the thental sleeve installed it is alnost impossible for the chips to reach the CRD.
It is therefore considered not to have safety impact.
