BROWNS FERRY NUCLEAR PLANT PROMPT NOTIFICATION SYSTEM

SUMMARY

The Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant prompt notification system, consisting of three components (i.e., fixed sirens, tone alert radios, and mobile sirens), was fully operational on January 30, 1982. The installation and testing of the 48 fixed siren components was completed January 30, 1982. One fixed siren in Limestone County was defective. The problem was corrected on February 2, 1982.

The tone alert radio component of the system was tested successfully on January 29, 1982. This component consists of 65 National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration tone alert radios that were placed in selected institutions.

The third component of the system consists of vehicles equipped with mobile sirens running predetermined routes. Arrangements were completed on January 21, 1982 for local counties to use three existing emergency vehicles and sirens until the sirens cedered by TVA arrive. In addition, four TVA vehicles equipped with sirens were placed in Limestone County to ensure that the notification requirements can be met. These vehicles were delivered to Limestone County on January 30, 1982.
