The Files
@g FROM:
James V. Zimmerman, Assistant Director C;/
Export / Import and International Safeguards tu Office of International Programs
SUBJECT:
PROPOSED LICENSE TO EXPORT NATURAL THORIUM AND URANIUM TO UNITED KINGDOM (XM08543)
On April 26, 1982, AMAX Inc., Climax Molybdenum Company filed an application to export 180 kilograms of natural thorium and 180 kilograms of natural uranium contained in 45 metric tons of tin concentrate to the United Kingdom. The thorium and uranium appear as a contaminant of the tin concentrate which is derived as a byproduct of the applicant's molybdenum mining and milling operations.
The thorium and uranium will not be recovered. AMAX has requested expeditious processing of this license application as the material is ready for immediate shipment.
C The staff has concluded that the proposed export meets the requirements of the Atomic Energy Act, as amended, and would not be inimical to the common defense and security of the United States.
-c In view of the above considerations, the staff iss he license without the normal 15-day waiting period.
