I I received telephone notification at 11:45 a.m. on May 7 from John Ken

of State Programs regarding an incident at the Sherwood Facility, Spokane, Washington which occurred the a.m. of May 7.

Mr. Kendig indicated that they had been previously notified by telephone at approximately 8:30 a.m.

by officials of the State of Washington giving preliminary notification and details of the incident and the fact that the State was sending personnel to the Sherwood site to monitor and evaluate the impact of the incident and the licensee's ongoing cleanup actions. The incident involved the loss of a clarifier tank resulting in the loss of 39,000 gallons of pregnant solution onto an adjacent parking lot. The actions to date being taken by the licensee involve:

1) scraping 6 inches of soil off the parking lot. The final disposition of these contaminated soils are unknown.

2)

2) the licensee has initiated an expanded environmental monitoring program with additional air, dust and water campling being performed.

There was no loss of life reported resulting from this incident. The State informed the NRC Office of State Programs that state personnel are currently enroute and no assistance at this time by NRC personnel has been requested. The Office of State Programs will provide additional informa-tion as it becomes available.
