Three Mile Island Nuclear Station, Unit 2 (TMI-2)
Operating License No. DPR-73 Docket No. 50-320 IE Bulletin 80-11 " Masonry Wall Design" This letter is the GPUN response to the IE Bulletin No. 80-11 " Masonry Wall Design" dated May 8, 1980.
This bulletin is determined to be a long term item as defined in the May 29, 1980 letter from the Metropolitan Edison Company to the NRC.
Due to the shutdown condition of TMI-2 with the reactor coolant temper-ature and pressure at approximately 100*F and 100 psi respectively, likelihood of a pipe break is extremely small and even if such a break were to occur, the associated dynamic loads would be very small compared to those considered in the design. Also, except for seismic loads, all masonry walls of concern are protected from external loads by virtue of being located internal to exterior building walls. Therefore, based on the above, CPUN does not believe that a detailed comprehensive review of masonry walls at TMI-2 is justified at this time.
Consequently, this is considered a long term item to be reconsidered at a future time prior to restart of TMI-2.
