public interest significance. The information is as initially received without verifi-cation or evaluation and is basically all that is known by NRC staff on this date.

SHIPMENT OF SUBMERGED DEMINERALIZER SYSTEM (SDS) WASTE VESSEL On May 21, 1982, the first SDS waste vessel (D 10015) was shipped from TMI to Richland, Washington. This 10 cubic foot SDS vessel, which was used to process
- waste water from the Reactor Coolant Bleed Tanks (RCBT's), contained approximately 13,000 curies of total radioactivity and was shipped in a special type B (designed for accidents) c:2. The bepartment of Energy (DOE) took possession of this waste material at TMI, and will conduct research and development glass vitrification (solidification) testing at the Hanford, Washington, facility. The NRC and Department of Transportation inspected the shipping container and transport. vehicle to ensure conformance with applicable regulations. The waste shipment is scheduled to arrive at the DOE facility on May 24, 1982.
Media interest will occur because the licensee plans to issue a press release.

This preliminary notification is issued for information only and no further action by the NRC is anticipated.
The NRC TMI Program Office received notification of this occurrence by monitoring events as they occurred and this information was current as of 11:00 AM, today.
