Denton, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U. S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Washington, D. C.

20555 Attention:

Mr. R. A. Clark, Chief Operating Reactors Branch 3 Gentlemen:

DOCKET NO. 50-301 CYCLE 9 RELOAD POINT BEACH NUCLEAR PLANT, UNIT 2 Our letter of January 25, 1982 discussed our plans l

concerning the Unit 2 Cycle 9 reload core safety evaluations.

i During the recent refueling of Unit 2, an assembly grid strap was damaged and it was decided that the assembly should be replaced with another assembly from the spent fuel pool.

As a result, the core loading pattern was changed and Westinghouse performed a new Reload Safety Evaluation for the reconstituted core.

This is to inform you that the new core characteristics l

remain less limiting than previously reviewed and accepted values, 1

and that the discussion and conclusions presented in our January 25 I

letter remain valid.

Very truly yours, SU g Assistant Vice President l
