May 13, 1982 Mr. Richard C. DeYoung Director of Inspection and Enforcement U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission East-West Building 3rd Floor, Room E322A 4350 East-West Highway Bethesda, Maryland HAND DELIVER -- THREE COPIES Attention:
Mr. Roger Fortuna
Dear Mr. DeYoung:
s In accordance with 10 C.F.R. Part 21 (and internal procedure Section 8.3.0./1-0), the Hayward Tyler Pump Company (HTPC) hereby gives notice to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission of a possible defect in one Class A Monel replacement pump shaft sent by HTPC to Texas Utilities Services, Inc. for Comanche Peak power station. The particular facts involved, including that information required by 10 C.F.R. Section 21.21, are set forth in HTPC's letter, a copy of which is attached, sent today to Texas Utilities.
So far as HTPC has yet been able to determine, that shaft is the only one made of Class A Monel which was heat straightened by HTPC and sent to Comanche Peak or any other nuclear power plant for use in an ASME Code pump.
HTPC has taken this action in light of information provided to the Company by its metallurgical consultant and based upon factual infor-mation concerning heat straightening obtained on May 12, 1982.
Very truly yours, f
