Dear Sir:

NUREG-0737 Item II.K.3.3. requested that challenges to safety and relief valves (SRV's) be reported on an annual basis, with data accumulation begin-ning on April 1, 1980..In Reference 1, the Power Authority subaitted a A

/

gDYb report on challerges occurring between April 1 and December 31, 1980.

.t Reference 2 provided a report of challenges whub occurred between January 1 and December 31, 1981. 'Ihis letter proviu additional clarifi-fg cation of the information in that report and supercedes Reference 2 in its entirety.

Between Jc.nuary 1 and December 31, 1981, the SRV's were challeuJed on only one occasion. On January 17, during a transient resulting in a reactor scram, the A, B, H and K valves were manually cycled one time each.

..-O During this same transient, the G valve failed to open in response to a manual actuation signal. '1he NRC was notified of this failure in Licensee -

Event Report No. 81-001/01T-0. This LER describes the failure of the G valve and the subsequent inspection of all SRV's.

No other SRV challenges or failures occurred in 1981. Future chal-lenges and failures will be reported on an annual basis. If you have any further questions, please contact Mr. J. A. Gray, Jr. of my staff.

Very truly yours, 1
