Unusual Event Docket Number 50-289

Subject:

CONTAMINATED INJURED EMPLOYEE At 9:19 PM on April 30, 1982, licensee representatives declared an Unusual Event in accordance with Emergency Plan Implementing Procedure 1004.1.

An injured man was transported to Hershey Medical Center at approximately 7:40 PM.

At the medical center a detailed survey indicated that the individual was slightly contaminated (5,000 Disintegrations Per liinute (DPM)) on the lower back area. Due to the extremely low levels of contamination, an initial survey prior to leaving the site did not detect the limited contamination on the individual \\ back. This information was given to the shift supervisor between 8:30 PM and 9:00 PM, April 30, 1982. The individual was suffering from heat exhaustion since he was involved in decontamination activities at the "B" Reactor Coolant Bleed Tank area and was heavily dressed with a double layer of protective clothing (PC's) and wet suit. The individual was decontaminated at the medical center and sent back to the site between 9:30 PM and 10:00 PM, April 30, 1982.

No exposure to the individual resulted from the ccntamination.

At 9:42 PM the Unusual Event was secured upon completion of appropriate notifications.

Media interest occurred because of licensee notification to local officials. The NRC did not issue a press release.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania was informed.

This preliminary notification is issued for information only and no further action by the NRC is anticipated.
