y April 29, 1982 Docket Nos. 50-277 50-278 Mr. Darrell G.

Eisenhut, Director Division of Licensing U.

S.

Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555

SUBJECT:

Schedule Relief for Several NUREG-0737 Modifications on Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station

Dear Mr. Eisenhut:

This letter notifies the NRC of a design deficlency in a TMI-related modification, and requests a schedule revision to accommodate correction of that deficiency.

Additionally, a schedule revision is requested to provide the time needed to confirm the operability of another TMI-related modification.

The requested schedule revisions supplements those identified in our response to Generic Letter 82-05 (S.

L.

Daltroff to D.

G.

Eisenhut, dated April 15, 1982).

NUREG 0737, Item II.B.3 (Post-accident Sampli ng Capability) requires the capability of obtaining a reactor coolant and containment atmosphere sample under accident conditions.

As identified in our response to Generic Letter No.

82-05 this modification was scheduled to be complete on Peach Bottom Unit 3 by April 30, 1982, and during the current refueling outage for Unit 2.

The installation of the sampling system as designed was recently completed on Unit 3.

However, as a result of an independent design review by Stone & Webster (requested by Philadelphia Electric Company), a design deficiency was

/

identified earlier this week in the pipe supports for the

containment atmosphere sample lines.

The problem involves less y

-e than 20 of the 122 supports and is due to the unique combination of loading conditions that exists primarily as a result of the heat tracing effects on the sample lines.

An extension in the implementation schedule to May 28, 1982 is requested to accommodate the engineering and field modifications needed to upgrade the sample line supports.

We expect to complete the same modification on Unit 2 during the current refueling outage.

The other modification involves the pneumatic supply to the ADS valves needed to comply with the requirements of NUREG-0737, Item II.K.3.28.

The commitment date for completion is currently April 30, 1982.

This modification has been installed as described in a letter dated December 29, 1981, S.

L.

Daltroff to E.

G.

Eisenhut.

However, check.out and testing of the system is currently in progress and may not be completed by April 30, 1982.

An extension of two weeks to May 14, 1982 in the implementation schedule is requested to accommodate completion of the testing, and corrections of any deficiencies.

These matters were reviewed with the NEC Peach Bottom Project Manager by telephone on April 29, 1982.

Should you have any questions regarding this request, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Very truly yours, h)k
