Dear Mr. Giuffrida:

6 I was pleased to learn that FEMA intends to present to thi T ederal Radiological Preparedness Coordinating Comittee (FRPCC) its plan for the interim distribution of potassium iodide to States that wish to have it available in the event of an accident at a nuclear facility. As noted in Mr. Krimm's testimony on behalf of FEMA before the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations of the House Interior and Insular Affairs Committee, NRC and FEMA both have a responsibility to see that Federal guidance is provided on stockpiling of potassium iodide and its use by the general public.

The Commission would appreciate an opportunity to review and formally concur in the guidance.

I understand that the witnesses at the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee hearing agreed that a six month period would be a reasonable period for issuing Federal guidance.

I believe we can meet that deadline.

Si ncerely, "
