Rhodes Resident Inspector Nuclear Regulatory Commission On-Site Inspectors Susquehanna steam Electric Station P. O. Box 52 Shickshinny, Pa. 18655 Cear Sir:
I am one of the coordinators of the Susquehanna Envirc.-
cental Advocates.
We have received reports from people cur. ntly or fornerly employed at the SSES concerning questionable er -
struction practices or existing defects at the plant.
i.' e
't. 2 :e teen and are very concerned about the safety of the plant.
I an writing to ask you to investigate tvo of the re;;rts we have received and to make your findings public.
We were informed that the reactor vessel head or cap,.s improperly installed.
Specifically, it was not placed in er.actly the right position, bolts were bent and that the equip-ment should have been replaced but, because of the time and expense involved, it has not been.
Secondly, we were inforced that a large concrete pipe, tuilt to carry water from the reactor to the cooling tower, had very large holes in it after the concrete pouring forms were renoved, and that these holes were cerely patched.
The reactor vessel is a critical piece of safety-related equip.ent.
If it was improperly built or assembled, we think the peo".le of this area should be told and the utility should do the job ri6ht.
Sincerely.
