Gentlemen:
I am enclosing Revision 1 to NUS Report NUS-3567 and the affidavit of Dr. Howard Joseph Eckert, Jr. As explained in Dr. Eckert's affidavit, Revision I corrects certain errors in the original document. This filing brings this matter to the attention of the Atomic Safety and Licensing Board and the parties.
NUS-3567, which is entitled " Structural Analysis of the Spent Fuel Pool Liner and Concrete Due to Coolant System Failure for the Big Rock Point Nuclear Power Plant,"
was prepared by NUS Corporation for Licensee on April 18, 1980.
Licensee commissioned the preparation of this analysis in order to respond to a request by the NRC staff, in this proceeding, for a quantitative analysis on the effects of pool boiling on the concrete structure, racks and liner of the Big Rock spent fuel pool.
NUS-3567 and related information was submitted to the NRC staff on June 20, 1980, by letter from Mr. David P. Hoffman to Mr. Dennis M. Crutchfield. This entire package was transmitted to the Atomic Safety and Licensing Board and the parties on July 24,1980. (See letter to the Licensing Board and parties from Joseph Gallo, dated July 24,1980.)

Shon April 28,1982 Page 2 The errors, which are corrected in Revision I to NUS-3567, were discovered on April 20, 1982, and Revision I has been under preparation since that time. As Dr. Eckert's affidavit indicates, the corrections do not alter the conclusions of the original document, namely that the concrete walls ~aiid floor and liner of the Big Rock Point spen,t fuel pool can withstand the effects of the pool water reaching a temperature of 237 F. Hence, the reliance placed upon NUS-3567 by the Licensee and the NRC staff remains valid for licensing purposes.
Counsel understands that the corrections to NUS-3567 will cause Mr. Raymond F.
Sacramo to revise his September 28, 1981 affidavit. (See Affidavit of Raymond F.
Sacramo submitted in support of Licensee's October 5,1981 motion for summary disposition on Christa-Maria Contention 8 and O'Neill Contention IllE-2.) Counsel also understands that the corrections to Mr. Sacramo's affidavit will not alter his conclusion, namely, that "the structural integrity of the spent fuel pool walls, floor, liner and racks are not adversely affected by the effects of pool boiling." Mr. Sacramo is presently preparing an affidavit which will set forth the necessary corrections and confirm his conclusion. We expect to file this affidavit by the close of business tomorrow, April 29,1982.
